Teaching the alphabet is foundational for reading and writing.

round the age of 2, children begin showing desire for learning alphabet letters. Although some young kids learn letters very quickly, others need more repetition and time for you to learn letters. Today I’m going to share with you some of my favorite techniques to teach the alphabet to ones that are little.

Here’s what a preschooler should be aware of before kindergarten:

• Recite/sing the alphabet
• Identify letters that are uppercase
• Identify lowercase letters
• Match letters that are uppercase lowercase letters
• Identify the sounds each letter makes
• Traces letters
• Write some alphabet letters

1. Sing Songs

Singing the alphabet song to your child introduces the letters for them in a fun way. Start singing in their mind as a child and as they age, ask them to start singing along (which they probably will do naturally!). My kids LOVE this CD by Discovery Toys that has a song about alphabet letters and also the sounds they make. It surely helped my kiddos learn their letters as well as the sounds.

2. Read Alphabet Books

3. Sandpaper Letters

Using sandpaper letters is a great method to introduce letters to children. My ones that are favorite Didax Sandpaper Tracing Letters or School Supply Tactile Letters Kit . This is an ideal pre-writing activity because children use their finger to trace the sandpaper letters. I like that the cards tell the young child how to start and which direction to go.

Sandpaper letters are included in the Montessori way of learning just how to read. These letters provide a tactile and way that is visual help children learn the alphabet. When you look at the Montessori method, you teach letters to a kid into the lesson that is 3-period.

1 st period is introducing the letter (“this is” period). Show your son or daughter the letters. Have them trace the sandpaper letters. The best way to teach children alphabet letters is by telling them their phonetic sound. So every time they trace the letter, say the sound that is phonetic.

2 nd period is association (“show me” stage). Ask your child to follow simple directions because of the letters. For example, please pick the/m/ up and set it up because of the window. Continue to do this with every letter times that are several reinforce this. If it is too difficult, go back to the first period.

3 rd period is recall (“what is this?” period). Only head to this period when they’ve mastered one other two periods. Put a letter in front of the child and say “Can you trace this and let me know what it is?” Continue with the other letters within the way that is same.

You are teaching them 3 things: the shape of letters, the feel of its shape and how its written, and how you pronounce its sound when you use these sandpaper letters.

4. Alphabet Puzzles

I believe teaching letters with alphabet puzzles are an tool that is amazing teaching the alphabet. This is my favorite puzzle, from Melissa and Doug. It’s a beautiful wooden puzzle with neat pictures. It is a great method to practice vocabulary and verbal skills, too.

5. Alphabet Printables

We have quite a few alphabet printables on my blog, but here are is a group this is certainly easy and fun for preschoolers. You shall need Do a Dot Markers or dot stickers to fill in the circles.

I really like pulling printables out for a fast and easy activity. I’m always advocating for hands-on learning, but sometimes it’s nice to accomplish a paper that is few. Using Do a Dot makers or dot stickers is fantastic for hand-eye coordination and motor that is fine.
